The St. Louis Metro Singers is pleased to have Mark Marting as its seventh Music Director. After an extensive search at the conclusion of the Chorus’ 2008-09 season, the Board of Directors selected Mark to lead the Chorus in this next chapter of its history.
Mark received his BA in 1976 and his MA in 1990 from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He is currently employed full time as Choral Director at St. Louis Priory School. Before becoming the St. Louis Metro Singers’ Music Director, Mark was the Music Director for the St. Louis Gateway Singers (formerly the Anheuser-Busch Employees’ Chorus). He has had extensive experience in the entertainment field, having been on the production staffs of the Muny and Six Flags Show Productions. He is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician.
Before each performance, Mark reminds his choirs to sing in their “PJs,” meaning to sing with “passion and joy.” As Mark explains it, singers need to convey to their audiences both the passion that comes from joining their voices together, working hard in rehearsal, and interpreting the intent of each composer, and the joy of showing the results of their hard work. Each concert is an opportunity to share with the audience our passion for and joy of choral singing.
“The feeling of belonging and contributing to a group of people with similar interests is powerful. I love being able to provide this experience for each choir member. I believe that in choral music the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. I want all who sing in the St. Louis Metro Singers and all who attend our performances to experience this synergy.”
